The History of London’s Drainage Systems
When London’s first proper sewage system designed by Joseph Bazalgette was completed in 1875, it was able to cope with two billion litres of waste per day. But it was designed in 1850 and only 40 years later the population of inner London had doubled to 5.5 million. Today’s population of Greater London now stands at roughly 9.6 million and although the sewage network has expanded to accommodate this growth, some of Bazalgette’s original Portland cement sewers are still in service.
However, maintaining, replacing and extending the capital’s sewage and surface drainage systems is an unending task and groundworks contractors need suppliers who can deliver quality drainage products quickly.
